How to teach big dogs to be considerate of small dogs size? I have a great dane and am getting a small dog (12 pounds). He is very considerate of other dogs when socializing. But- just in case I would like to ask anyone who has a big dog and small dog how they got there big dog to be considerate (not step on, not bite, and to be easy playing) of the small dog. I would like to know about how people taught their big dogs that. Also I would like to ask how to introduce a big dog to a small dog. We are getting our small dog second, since we already have a big dog. Does that make a difference? Thank you.
How can I fix my dogs unusual behavior? My dog is a minituare Schnauzer, but he's really big for a minituare. Well my dogs problem is that he always barks and growls at other dogs, even ones that are twice his size. He can't confront other dogs because there either scared of him, or they get pissed off at my dog. There are only a few dogs my dog confront calmly. I think my dog only growls because he's excited, because once he meets the dog he's very gentle and just sniffs around. How do I fix my dogs problem, I know one way to fix it is to get another dog for him to play with. But my family does not want another dog. It's hard to introduce him to dogs because people just walk away at my barking dog lol.
How do Cats and Dogs know which is cat food and which is dog food? I have 2 cats and three dogs. One night, I ran out of cat food (the dry type) and my cats were hungry. So since I had dog food only and the shops were closed, I gave them dog kibbles. They're more or less of the same shape and size and are made of the same ingredients - chicken. My cats took a nibble and refused the rest of the bowl, preferring to go hungry than eat dog food. The next day, i got them a fresh pack of made-for-cats kibbles and they immediately dived in and ate up. How come my cats knew what I gave them wasn't cat food? I also know of dogs that won't eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos they're pigs and will eat anything). It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some special ingredient you put in cat and dog food that makes cats and dogs know which kibbles is who's? Also, nowadays, dogs are eating fish too - like salmon. You can't say it's the ingredient. How come they know the difference?
Why is my dog too much shy or submissive with other dogs? My german sherperd dog is already 10 months old. She is still very shy with other dogs. Even a very small size dog can chase her. If other dogs approach her aggresively, she submited immediately. I would like her to play with other dogs happily with confidence. Most dogs she met in off-leash park were very nice(not as aggressive as she thought). Please give me some tips on how to train her to be confident like a gsd should be.
What do dog fighters generally do with the ears of the dogs they intend to fight? I saw a pit-bull type dog at the shelter with ears that were docked very short to the head. Does this indicate that this dog was used or was intended to be used for dog fighting? What do dog fighters do with the ears of the dogs anyway? In old days didn't they used to dock them real close to the head?
What kind of dogs would make a good indoor pet; with children and cats? We have young children, and quite a few cats (We're a bengal cat breeder). We want a dog that can thrive with the chaos that can often be associated with life with a family. The dog would be fixed. We don't particularly have a ton of spare time, so we don't want a long haired dog, besides the fact I'm somewhat allergic. We don't mind a small dog, but we DON'T want a yipper. Both my husband and I will be working, but it won't ever be alone, it'll always have the cats here, and two of them absolutely adore dogs, if anything, they'll sleep with it and follow it around, play with it. Large, or small, it doesn't really matter; but it needs to be somewhat easily trained, especially if a larger dog; we don't have problem putting the time into it that it need to train, but it's going to grow up with young kids, and we need it to pick up new commands with some work. It'll be taken for walks, up to 45 mins a day, but would most likely not have a yard to run in. What dog would suit our needs? I'll repeat, we don't want a yipper. Or a long haired dog. Otherwise, we'll all for any ideas.
Have a dog that barks at 2 dogs when they pass the house. How do we get him to stop? He is a beagle who will only bark when he needs to go outside or wants more food. We are very lucky. But, there are 2 dogs that don't socialize with other dogs that he barks and howls at when they pass by the house. The owners of the 2 dogs think he is adorable and laugh when he does this but we want this behavior to stop. Other dogs in the neighborhood also bark and growl at these 2 dogs too.
How do I get my dog to obey me at the dog park when she is around other dogs? My dog obey's me ok at home and at the dog park. That is until we get around other dogs. Once she starts running around with other dogs, she completely ignores me. It's ok that she runs around with other dogs and they all play well together, but I need to make sure she stays some what close to me and will come when called. Any suggestions on how to get her to obey a "come" command when she's around other dogs?
How do you feel about the poor dogs that have to live outside dogs? I have always cringed at the site of outside dogs they are either free roaming, tied up with a crappy dog house for cover or in a kennel all day and night. If you own a dog and keep him outside morning noon and night, why even own a dog anyway! They are part of the family and I can't imagine them being happy out there all the time. They need walked, socialized and to be in good health and clean smelling. I live in a big city where alot of the people keep their dogs outside and it's an inconvience to not be able to sleep soundly at night. They use these dogs as burglar alarms or they sell drugs and want some type of alert system, so they have dogs tied up in various spot over their yards. Even with a large kennel your dog is not getting what it needs in life. Why have a dog if you aren't going to care for them properly? Why not let them out during the day and crate them at night? if you live in the country and have more than an acre and your dog is loose, this question is not geared towards you! This ? is geared towards the dogs that have no where to go!!!
How can I get my dogs to get along better? They don't fight or anything like that. My oldest dog (2 1/2 year old Boston Terrierr) lets my new puppy ( 2 month old Jack Russel Terrier) basically dominate him. She nips at him, chews on his toys and chases him all over the house and our yard. I guess I figured since he is the older dog, was in the house first and is male, he would be the dominant dog. But, she is dominating him. My male dog is fairly passive and will not bark at her, or nip/bite her. I am unsure if I should do anything or just let "dogs be dogs" and let them work it out. I guess I feel my male dog, seeing as how we got him first, should be the dominant dog. But maybe not.
How do I teach my dog to be nicer to other dogs? I have an 8-9 year old Chihuahua and every time one of my relatives brings their dogs over, my dog gets feisty and starts barking uncontrollably at the other dog and tries to harm them. We want to get a new dog, but it's impossible to have 2 dogs in the same house under these circumstances. How do I teach my dog to be nicer to other dogs?
How to socialize my dog with other dogs? I have a male maltese mixed, 1 1/2 years old at home and recently adopted a new dog, a 3 years old male shih tzu. The problem is, the shih tzu basically does not get along with all dogs, not just my current maltese mixed. He'll growl whenever a dog comes near him and even attempt to attack and bite other dogs. Since he is a rescued dog, I do not have any information of his past. He marks very often though I've tried to correct him many times. How do teach him to be calmed and submissive when he's around with other dogs?
When is the best time to introduce dogs with a new puppy? I have a new puppy (yorkie) and also have two larger, outdoor dogs. I have already let the puppy in contact with the more timid dog, he's actually afraid of her. The interaction was quick. My problem may be with my older dog. He isn't aggressive, he just wants to sniff her and play. But she's 4 lbs. and he's about 70lbs. I am planning on training classes with the puppy, the other two are already good, but if a little, yappy dog is bothering them... well, they are dogs. Should I wait until the puppy has more training and will listen better? The bigger dogs are in a dog run, so they do see her when I take her out to potty and they have met through the wire fence. I take my bigger dogs to the dog park and they are fine, they always have the little ones running after them, but this one lives at thier home now. I'm only concerned because she will always be a tiny dog and I know it only takes one wrong move... Should I just wait until I have better control of her? All wonderful advice, thank you. But I think I'm more concerned that the puppy will attack the bigger one, and he will not put up with it. She already acts dominant and I know she is going to learn that she isn't. I just don't want her hurt or him hating her forever. When we got our middle dog last year, ther were no problems at all. But he was a bigger puppy and he didn't dare try to dominate the other one. I have tried bringing the older one inside to meet her, but she just barked and tried to bite him and of course, he tried to return the favor. I guess I just have to toughen up... ;-)
How can I get my dog to be less aggressive with other dogs? I've had my dog for about 2 months now. I rescued him from a shelter, he came from an abusive background but he's a great dog. He's very aggressive with other dogs though. He growls when he's near them and I've learned that it's because he wants to get to know them but he doesn't "introduce" himself properly. A month ago, he was attacked by another dog and it was horrible. I thought he was going to get killed. Thankfully, that didn't happen but now I'm so afraid when I take him for walks or to the park. I feel like something like that will happen again and I won't be able to get him out of the situation. The minute I see another dog, I take my dog and we leave. I can't even enjoy my time out with him because I'm constantly looking for other dogs. What should I do?
How come people say milk is bad for dogs? 2 stories: My husband had a dog when we were dating about 9years ago. He found the dog laying on the ground taking his last breath almost dying and growing up people told us when a dog is sick give them milk. My husband gets the gallon of milk ,opens the dogs mouth and makes the dog drink it. After 5 minutes the dog gets up, almost falling but gets up and starts walking. That dog died of old age. Another story: My small female chihuahua was coughing and vomiting and I gave her milk, within a few minutes, I no longer heard the cough and she stopped vomiting. Do my dogs just have strong digestive systems or what? Or does Milk really help sick dogs?Just wondering if anyone else has used this on there sick dog?
Is it possible for a dog to be allergic to another dogs coat? I take my german shepherd every once in a while to play with an american bulldog. The american bulldog's owner told me that her dog stayed itching himself all night long after it played with my dog. My dog is free from fleas & ticks. The other dog is also free from fleas & ticks. Someone mentioned dogs can be allergic to other dogs coats. Is this possible?
Should all dogs over 40 pounds be required to be fixed? First of all. I am an animal and dog lover. The shelters are overpopulated by large unwanted dogs millions of which are euthanized everry year. Most shelters will have very few if any small dogs and most have a long adoption waiting list for small dogs. Large dogs have two or three times the number of pups per birth than small dogs do. So there is clearly a very serious problem with large dog overpopulation. In addition, large stray dogs acan be a serious danger resulting in thousands of serious hospitalized dog maulings every year. So should all large dogs be required to be fixed by one year old unless it belongs to a licensed dog breeder? Again SMALL DOGS are not the problem. In fact there is a shortage of them judging by the shelters long waiting lists for adoption so that is obviously a waste of time and resources. It is the large dogs who have 10-12 pups per litter vs small dogs 3-4 pups per litter.
How does a dogs social structure work as a pet within a standard human family? I was lead to believe that most dogs view the humans their most commonly around in much the same way as they'd view other dogs they'd be around in the wild, kind of like a pack. What position within that pack does the family dog give view itself? Does it consider itself to be a member of the pack (family), or does the dog view the family as being members of the dogs pack, and thus the dog views itself as the leader?
How do I stop my dog attacking other dogs? Whenever I go for a walk with my dog, a Jack russell cross, he tries to attack other dogs. I got him from a cats and dogs home a couple of months ago. I like to let him off for a run around because he has a lot of energy. Most of the time there's another dog in the field and he runs off to it. He won't come if I call him if there's another dog and he tries to attack it. A couple of dogs he seems fine with, he sniffs them, then he suddenly tries to attack him. I want to let him off for a run around but theres nowhere else I can do that apart from the field. I want to do something before he gets hurt.
What toy breed dog would be good to get for a beginner dog owner who is afraid of dogs and their bark? I get scared when larger breed dogs growl or bark. I got attacked by a corgi before and certain breeds make me nervous, but the breeds that I like are : Maltese, poodles, schnauzers, pugs and miniature mutts. Also, due to a mild allergy, dogs with coarse hair like labs tend to make my skin itch. Yet, poodles and cavalier king Charles spaniels and those breeds mentioned above didn't make me itch. A dog would give me an excuse to walk around and not look weird, especially when I go too close to people w/dogs.
What do dog groomers use to make dogs smell so good? This is going to sound like a weird question, but how do dog groomers get the dogs to have that certain smell - I can't explain it, but every dog groomer I've ever been to has made my dogs smell the same way. I love it :) Is there a certain shampoo or spray that they use?
Small Dog Breeders, I need your help! I love animals and want to know how to start breeding small dogs? I am looking for something that I can do that I will love and enjoy. I love animals most of all dogs and theres nothing like having babies to take care of. My mother in law breeds exotic bird and I know that she loves it, I just need some great web sites to look at and some starter tips. What do I need? How much do shots and registered papers cost? Where do you buy breeding dogs? How many pups can a small breed of a dog have in one litter?
How many other dogs does your dog meet? Some people seem to keep their dogs away from other dogs, so my question is how many other dogs does your dog meet in a day . Me and my dog meet 4 other dog walkers, with 7 dogs every morning. There is no one else around at that time in the morning so all 8 dogs run round the park together. In the evening my dog meets a few other dogs but I tend to keep him on the lead, there are too many distractions around to let him off the lead at that time.
How often is the dog park good for dogs? My 6 month AB/Lab mix LOVES going to the dog park. We take her a couple times a week. But my husband wants to take her more often, I'm personally afraid she will pick up bad habits. I have heard other dog owners say that their dog has become defensive or aggressive after incidents at a dog park. She has such a sweet and mild tempermant now and I worry she will change having too much interaction with some of these dogs. What do you think?
What are some little dogs that are really good at agility? Are bigger dogs better at it then little ones? What are some little dogs that rock at agility? I'm talking in the 8-13 inch dogs at the withers (shoulders) I am getting a smaller dog but I'm not sure if she'll be good at agility so I would like to know of some other little dogs that do really well. Are larger dogs better then the smaller ones?
What breed of dogs are comparable to Golden Retrievers and labs in personality? I love Golden Retrievers but I would like to get into another breed. My mother in law has labs so I would like something different. I don't care if it is a small dog or a big dog but I love the personality of Golden and I can not find a dog that is as perfect as a Golden. I want it to be good with kids and all people and other animals, dogs and cats alike. I want it to be loving and loyal and very playful. I want it to be sweet and gentle. Is there such a dog?
How do you take dogs on road trips or camping? I am planning on getting a dog and taking it on roadtrips like to camping. How do you take the dog on long roadtrips? What happens when they have to go? Where do the dog stay in the car? Where do dogs sleep when they camp? Tell me everything about how you camp with big dogs and little dogs. Thanks!
How to train my dog not to be aggressive with other dogs? I have a dog (8ball) he is a retriever mix and about 10 months old. I have been trying to walk him but every time we run into a dog he tries to attack. I turn around and try to go the opposite way but he just pulls and growls. I really want to be able to take him to the dog park and let him play with other dogs and play fetch at the park instead of our small backyard. What can i do to train him to be more friendly with other dogs. P.S. I dont want to get a personal trainer. It costs too much money.
How can I get my dog to greet other dogs properly? How can I get my dog to act like a normal dog when he meets other dogs? He runs up to them and starts barking and running round them, occasionally trying to bite them. I got him from a rescue home a few months ago and he still hasn't changed. He's a Jack russel cross but he doesn't nip or anything. I just want him to behave like a normal dog when he's around other dogs. I walk him in a nearby field and let him of the leash. He's also neutered.
Do weiner dogs and labs make good friends? Would they enjoy hanging out while home alone? We already have a one year old chocolate labrador who loves going to the dog park and swimming at the lake. However, we were looking for a friend for our lab to have while we're away at work, and hopefully for her to play with as well. The dog we've had in mind is a weiner dog, because they're adorable. So, my question is, how well would weiner dogs and labradors get along and would they play together?
What dog food should I avoid feeding my dogs because of the food contamination? My dogs eat the Ol' Roy dry dog food from those big bags, and it seems fine. But when this bag is all used up, is it okay to buy the same thing? I just want to know what brands are contaminated and to avoid getting. Thanks.
How to get a dog to get along with other dogs? My roomate and I both just got dogs. I got mine, a blue heeler, about a week or two before he got his yellow lab. My blue heeler went after his dog right away but seemed to calm down that night. We went to bed, my dog escaped my makeshift pen and when I woke up they were both hanging out downstairs no problem. They are usually ok with each other but when I bring my dog in from a walk he always goes berzerk. It happens every single time that when he comes in he goes right after the lab. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The first couple times the lab was right at the door and I attributed it to the surprise. The last few though he's been visible but on the other side of the house.
How do you socialize a dog that is scared f other dogs? We have a dog that is about 9 months old. she hasnt had much interaction with other dogs so we are trying to socialize her with my dogs which aregood with other dogs. What is the right way to introduce her to them? how can we help her trust other dogs?
How do I keep my dog from fighting with other dogs when she first meets them? When she first meets a dog she automatically tries to establish dominance. If the other dog is submissive, things are fine, but at times she just doesn't get along with others--especially if it's an adult dog. Is there a way that I can be the dominant one and keep her from doing this with other dogs or do I just need to let the dogs work it out.
Fighting dogs is a hot issue. Is it equally cruel to hunt animals for sport? Dog fighting is becoming more of a hot button issue. Dogs are virtually innocent creatures that should serve as a companion. Oftentimes they are used as an assistant in the recreational killing of other animals. Fighting dogs and roosters is no longer an acceptable form of entertainment. Why do people accept the killing of game for purposes other than food and warmth? How can a group of armed men chasing animals be considered a sport?
What happens when female dogs are in heat? My dog is running out lose right now with other dogs in a pack. He cried all day yesterday to go run lose, and he got lose just a while ago. My uncle said most likely theres a female dog around that's in heat. He was telling me they'll fight over the girl dog. Should I be worried that my dog is in danger?
What dogs are good for people with allergies to dander? My mom has allergies to dog & cat dander, but we want to get a dog. What dogs would be okay to get?
Why do dogs jump up onto something when we pat on the object? I've never understood this- why do some dogs automatically think to jump up onto something when a human pats their hand on the object? Why do people automatically assume the dog will do it (some dogs do not)? Why do we "pat the seat" to entice a dog to sit in a certain spot?
How do you train a dog to not be jealous of other dogs around her owner? My golden retreiver will not allow other dogs to come near me (except my other golden) in the dog park and outside. I can not even go up to them anymore! I try time outs, but it is very hard to get her attention and the other dogs' owners freak out thinking that she will hurt their dog. She plays fine (submissively) with any dog as long as they don't get close to me. Any ideas?
What is the best way to teach dogs not to fight with neighbor dogs through the fence? My dogs jump at the fence and bark at the neighbors' dogs, and their dogs do the same to outs, and it drives me crazy! It's also dangerous. My dogs are small/medium (34 lbs and 14 lbs) but the neighbors have huge Goldern Retrievers and a really vicious-looking pit bull type terrier. My dogs are a whippet and a 14 lb jack russell-type mixed terrier. Shock collars are not an option for use on our dogs. Please help! thanks.
How do I get my dog to be friendly with other dogs? I have a 2 year old miniature pinscher, and she is not nice around other dogs at all. When we first got her, she met another min pin the second day we had her, and that dog nipped at her. I think this is the source of her fear. We do not know anyone else with a dog, so it is very difficult to socialize her with other dogs. We would like to get another one, but are apprehensive becasue of how vicious she gets around dogs. Does anyone have any suggestions, or have been in the same position?
What are some good dogs for slightly allergic people to have? My boyfriend is not actually allergic to dogs, but he's said that some dogs have bothered him in the past. We want a dog really bad, preferably a larger dog, and I was wondering what the best hypoallergenic dogs are?
How Do I Train My Dog to Be Under Control Around Other Dogs? I have a Jack Russell Terrier, just over a year old. I live in an apartment complex where a lot of people own dogs. When I am walking my dog and he spots another dog, he wildly tries to pull me in that direction. If the dog is close, my dog lets out loud shrill screams and continues to try to pull me. It is almost impossible to control and its embarassing. Other than that he is very well behaved for a JRT and he is real smart. Just a little wild in certain situations, this being the worst. So what can I do to control this behavior? he's not aggressive in a mean way. He just is curious I think and wants to play. But he plays rough with other dogs like wrestling around and nipping (no intent to hurt). If I let him check out the other dog, They sniff, then start wrestling and the leashes get tangled up.
If dog food is bad for dogs than what should we feed them? I just ask a question on what food dogs can't eat and there was a long list, practically almost everything. I am planning to get a dog and want to know everything I can.
How many dogs are you allowed to have before you need a kennel license? I was recently talking about my life's ambitions with my mum. I'm a big dog lover, and I told her I want to move out to a rural area and get about 5-10 dogs. A family member then remarked that if you want more than 4 dogs, you need to have a kennel license, and have to follow kennel regulations. Is this true? All attempts to Google this topic came back with information about how dogs in kennels were required to be vaccinated.
How do you train a dog to stop jumping up at other dogs ? and barking at them ? How do you train a dog to stop jumping up at other dogs ? We have a pug border cross. Do you train it to sit and then tell it to sit when he sees another dog ? Or do you need to do something else ? Can you train him yourself or should you pay for dog training. My dog is around 18 months old and we have only just got him. Any help would be appreciated.
Can dogs have a small amount of decaffinated coffee in there cookies? I know caffeen is bad for dogs, but my dog loves the smell of coffee. She goes nuts when I come home with a cup of Dunkin!! I was wondering if it would be a problem if I baked her some plain dog cookies using a cup or so of decaffinated coffee in place of water? I guess the overall amount would be on cup of decaffinated coffee split up amongst 40 - 50 cookies. Thanks!
Why is my dog too much shy or submissive with other dogs? My german sherperd dog is already 10 months old. She is still very shy with other dogs. Even a very small size dog can chase her. I've watched training shows but i'm not sure if i can do what they do cause they're pros at it and all. Any suggestions for helping a dog get over aggression towards other dogs?

How do you train your dogs to walk without a leash? My fiance's parents dogs have always been trusted to walk outside and come back in without a leash. My friends dog and 1 of my dogs can do this as well, but the other 3 dogs are clueless (they are a bit young). Can this be trained or is everyone else just fortunate unlike me? I live in an apartment with a nice side yard (with no fence). It'd also be nice to take my other 3 dogs to the park some day to play fetch. My trustworthy dog is a basset/beagle, other's are a border collie mix.. mini dachshund and beagle/rat terrier mix.
What types of dogs leave the least amount of hair on clothes and the floor? I am interested in eventually buying a dog. However, i hate when dog hair gets on my clothes and all over the floor. What types of dogs are less likely to shed a lot and/or get hair all over my the floor and my things? I'm very interested in dogs such as Siberian Huskies, Dobermans, Labs, etc.
When my dogs fight should i break it up or let them figure out whos dominant? My 2 dogs are each about 35 and 40 pounds each. So its about a fair match...They are mostly outside dogs so thats where they eat. When i feed one the other more agressive dog runs and eats out of both dishes (no matter how far apart i fed them). So should i break up their fight or just let them figure out whos dominat on their own?

How can I help my dog to overcome its fear with other dogs? My dog is a Cairn Terrier and he is almost 2 yrs old. He was very friendly and playful with other dogs. On Jan 3, 07, he got attacked and wounded by our neighbour's German Sherperd. His body has healed but he fears other dogs now. Whenever we see dogs that are bigger than or equal to his size, he gets very nervous and barks crazily. And also he would pee when he was too scared. I feel so sad because I don't know what I can do to calm him or to stop him. Can anyone give some advices?
