How can I Ferret proof and what are foods poisonous to ferrets?

I am looking to ferret proof my home and maybe get a list of foods that are poisonous to ferrets. I seem to find many different opinions but not a list that I can easily print out and keep handy. Can anyone give me some ferret proofing ideas and some more poisonous foods for ferrets?

  2. Ferret-proofing a house or apartment is often difficult and time-consuming, but well worth the effort. Get down on all fours, crawl around, and look for any small space that a ferret's head could fit through (generally, if it can get its head in, it can get its whole body in!) Use duct tape and cardboard to seal off areas behind cabinets, under the refrigerator, or any place you don't want your ferret to go. Many people find that having just one safe play room is easier than ferret-proofing an entire apartment or house. One objective is safety but another might be keeping the place clean - if a ferret can dig or get into something, it will! Potted plants especially should be placed well out of reach. As for foods, your ferret should only be fed his usual ferret diet (if it doesn't have a ferret on the box, don't consider it!) The ferret diet should be high in protein, so be sure to check the box/bag for chicken or something similar listed as the first ingredient. The main food to keep away from them is sugar or anything containing sugar, as ferrets are prone to insulinoma (ferret diabetes) if they consume too much. Most foods given as treats are okay in tiny amounts (corn flakes, raisins, or Marshall ferret treats), but make sure your ferret eats his treat right there, and doesn't stash it for later. Stashes of sugar-containing treats can be consumed all at once, easily leading to health problems.
  3. Check the .com site below. Has good info on ferrets, including feed, health and handlilng info. Also has links to other good ferret sites worth checking out.
