What types of wood are suitable for hamsters to chew on?

I have recently got a chinese dwarf hamster and am having trouble keeping it amused. I am thinking of giving it a twig to play on and gnaw but am insure of what type of trees are poisonous to them. Which tree's twigs can I use? Also if anyone has any helpful tips about hamsters, they are very welcome. Thanks x x x

  1. Hi, I don't keep hamsters I keep rat's but I know they are only meant to gnaw on apple wood. all good pet shops should stock nice apple wood chews, most do fun chew toys, edible houses and thing's like that.
  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamsters If you check in the web below you will find all the information you need to keep your hamster healthy and happy!
  3. Pet shops sell wood chews that are safe for hamsters - and small enough for them too. They have natural bark chews, colored chews, shaped chews, and even chews that look like baby blocks. If you were to get wood from outside, you would need to be sure that the tree and ground have not been treated with anything. Pesticides will easily kill a hammie. You might have a hard time keeping your hammie amused. Hamsters are nocturnal. They play at night, and sleep during the day. Make sure your hammie has a small wheel for running and exercise. Give him some small empty boxes that he can hide in and chew up. He'll probably also like the empty cardboard rolls from paper towels and toilet paper - a very cheap toy for them. Give him bedding that's safe and deep enough that he can dig and burrow under it. Most importantly, always make sure he has water and his cage is kept clean.
  4. Hamsters need to have things to play with, otherwise they will get bored. Having wood to chew on is a good idea, but there are other things that will statisfy him. Try going to the pet shop and seeing what they have. You can get spinning wheels, tunnells and more!! Make sure he has an interesting cage! And back to wood. DO NOT just pick out the garden, it may be unclean. Buy things from the pet shop, they sell wooden blocks and things for your hamster to chew on. Happy nibbling! (hamster not you!)
  5. apple tree wood is supposed to be good for rats i guess the same would be for hamsters, though i would get chews from pet shops or online, as you don't know what gets sprayed on trees outside and you don't want to upset its tummy.
  6. Wooden pet chew toys are an ideal choice. Wood items should ideally be safe (stay away from cedar or other evergreen type woods), and pesticide and chemical free. If you are unsure a type of wood is safe, it is probably best to stick with items made for use by pets. Pesticide-free fruit tree branches from your backyard or hardwood wood blocks or shapes that are not chemically treated are okay for your hamster.
