What kind of fish should I feed my turtle?

My turtle is too small now, but when he/she is bigger, I'm going to throw some fish into its tank for it to snack on. I was planning on small feeder goldfish you see in the petstore usually in one big tank. I recently, however, read in two places that feeder goldfish are bad for your turtle and both sites recommended rosie fish instead? Since, two sites have said goldfish are bad, I'm convinced I should re-consider. What are rosie fish and are they common? Like could I get them at an average Petco?

  1. u should feed him minows rights now
  2. Feeder fish are good, but don't buy them from Petco nor Petsmart. They carry a lot of bacteria that night infect you turtle.
  3. Rosy Reds are minnows. I think you can buy them at places like PetSmart etc. They are typically used as feeder fish (although some people do keep them as display fish).
  4. Young ones need the protiens, so they have to fed fish and meat etc I feed my RES live earth-worms which I have to dig out from my backyard and also frozen shrimps. Anything that can swim is ok for the turtles.............. just drop in a few of these feeder fish and let your turtle have some exercise. ..... I once caught some tiny fish (type I don't know) from the local stream and threw 'em in,,,,,, WOW it was a sight to see as the RES were chasing the fish and the fish would try to dodge 'em till, obviously they would be caught and eaten up in the end..........
  5. feed him piranhas
  6. feeder fish, which you can buy extremely cheaply at almost any pet store, and don't listen to any one that says that the bacteria on the fish will kill them because turtles have a very strong immune system, some stronger than ours. you can also try minnows, you can buy them at fishing tackle shops for a little more than feeder fish, but they were bred on a farm and have been fed food to grow faster and fatter.

  8. sharks
  9. Charlene has the right idea. Go to a bait shop for bait-fish, If you can get something other than minnows (killyfish are good), do so. The guts of minnows contain thiaminase, which breaks down that vitamin, In addition, goldfish (a minnow) are very fatty. Rosy reds are minnows too. I've never heard of a thiamin-deficient turtle, though, so don't worry if that's all you can get.
